As Club America and Toluca prepare to clash in the CONCACAF Champions League, there has been plenty of pre-match hype surrounding both sides. Here’s a timeline of all the major news and events leading up to tonight’s match:

-March 16, 2016: Club America enters the competition as the defending champions and are drawn in Group E alongside Cruz Azul, UNAM and Toluca.
-March 25, 2016: In their first game of the tournament, Club America defeat Cruz Azul 3-0 at Estadio Azteca. Giovani dos Santos scores two goals and Andres Guardado assists on one.
-April 1, 2016: Club America caps off their group stage campaign with a 2-1 victory over UNAM at Estadio Azteca. Angel Zaldivar scores the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute after receiving a pass from Raul Jimenez. Oswaldo Alanis also scores an own goal for UNAM in added time.

-April 6, 2016: In their second group stage game, Club America fall 2-1 away to Toluca at Toluca Stadium. The first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals pits Club América against Toluca F.C. The two sides have met in the knockout stages of this competition on three occasions, with the last encounter taking place in the 2009-10 edition when Toluca won on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Mexico City.

Toluca came into this clash with a 2-0 lead from their Liga MX matches and América had to win by two goals or more if they wanted to stand any chance of reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 1997. Goals from Javier Aquino and Sebastián Castaño gave América a 2-1 victory at Estadio Nemesio Díaz in the opening half, but Toluca produced an improved display in the second half and equalised through José Rodríguez. A miss from Ángel Zabaleta saw Toluca take the lead on 83 minutes and they held on until extra time where Aquino’s stunning free kick won them a penalty shootout. In the end, Toluca emerged as winners thanks to Rodrigo Moreno’s successful shoot-out conversion, sending América home empty handed for the fourth successive year.
